Pull the cluster
Pull the speedo head
Cut, using soldering iron, an access hole at the infamous white gear. This
is instead of wrestling off the speedo needle.
Pull gear
Pull shaft (quiet down)
Knurl shaft end using vise-grips
Krazy glue gear back onto shaft
Wriggle shaft back into cluster
and back together she goes....

Worked for me, as described, on my '85 5000S. Five thousand miles slater,
never skipped a beat, and I can reset the trip odo whilst moving!
