RE: Speedometer works... how come my odometer doesn't?
The same thing happened to my '86 4kq. The problem is that the shaft that
goes through the odometer shifts to the left, causing the drive gear to
disengage. It's not very difficult to take the speedometer apart.
Remove the gauge cluster and the lens to the gauges. Before removing the
speedometer needle, understand that when it is resting, it is in tension.
Pick up the needle over the stop and take note on where it rests. You
will have to put it back together the same way, or your speedometer reading
will be off. GENTLY pry off the speedometer pointer and remove the black
screws on the speedometer face and remove it. Pry off the spring on the
shaft and remove the screws. The odometer and trip meter should lift out
of the cluster. It's actually a pretty bad design considering the shaft is
basically just jammed in there with nothing holding it in position but
friction. All of the number wheels are supposed to turn independently from
the shaft, but the silver gear on the end is supposed turn dependent of the
shaft. The shaft tends to slip out of this silver gear. I took mine apart
and put a dab of super glue in the gear and quickly replaced the shaft.
Don't get the super glue on any other components or you will freeze it up.
Make sure you have it back together properly before you glue it. It's
kind of tricky, but it can be done. The worst thing you can do is break a
broken odometer. When you put it back together make sure all of the gears
are in place and the odometer moves smoothly. It sounds difficult, but if
you are at all mechanically inclined, it's actually a very simple gear
system. Hope this helps.
