bike rack

jan sez...
Gas mileage is 18-20mpg in mixed driving, about 24mpg
freeway(70-90mph with a bicycle on the roof).

hmmmm. as a bicycle framebuilder for almost 20 years i wouldn't recommend
those speeds with a bicycle on top. personally i love bicycle roof mounts
because they provide me with lots of <good $$$$> repairs. try sticking your
hand out of the window at 90mph to judge the stresses on your rack. the
other problem is with tired drivers entering their garage or a low underpass
and forgetting the overhead bike. that's more $$$ for me and some for the
bodyshop too.
i regularly race and bring 2 or three bikes with me as well as tools etc
(bike as well as audi related) although i can fit three bikes in the trunk i
usually put two in the trunk and one, with the front wheel removed, behind
the front seats or on the back seat. when i sponsored a large racing team i
used a egdod maxivan which could hold 8 riders and 11 bikes plus tools and
baggage, driver and manager too.
