4KCSQ camshaft seal

My 87 4KCSQ is bleeding oil from the front camshaft seal. I read the Bentley explanation on how to 
remove the seal and, as always, one needs VW/Audi special tool xy38298ufd9j9e... Has anyone done 
this w/o the tool?? Can you just split the main cam bearing and pop it out?? I have the cam cover 
off  already....

BTW - Does anyone in the Boston, MA area have that cursed crank pulley tool I could borrow/rent to 
do my timing belt??
