RE: copper 'hose'
Thanks I had hoped that I would here this!
It's funny that another lister also thought that this tube was a replacement
for a flexible piece hose. It's actually a metal pipe that runs along the
block from near the front to the rear of the engine just under the head /
block join that has a 'T' coming off near the back. It's rusty around a
nipple used for securing a wiring strap.
Thanks again!

Subject: copper 'hose'
Peter, I've not done this with an Audi but have with some of my Rover
sedans. With the use of some 45 or 90 deg fittings many creative shapes are
possible. Done with both an engineer and artist's eye a fabrication like
this can be very pleasing and near lifetime sturdy. Polish to emphasize or
paint to match. Caution though... the addition of a chunk of rigid tubing
will alter the ability of that line to absorb vibration so you may want to
either secure it to something and make sure there is enough 'slack' to allow
for engine movement. Additionally, the absence of a ridge or bead at the
junction may tend to let the hose walk off the tube, so either rough up the
copper surface and use a pair of clamps, or see if a local metal shop has a
bead roller to make the ends slip proof.
