AM radio static induced by Climate Control

The AM section of my Bose radio ('91 200q) has suddenly begun to pick up
considerable static-type interference when the Climate Control is set to
"auto"--whether or not A/C compressor is on. This very loud static is
mainly heard as I *accelerate*, but not while at constant throttle or
coasting. The problem is absent when the CC is set to "econ" (or OFF).
It's definitely _not_ a high-frequency (engine-speed related) type of
whine. More of the loose-connection variety.

What's going on (or off) here?
