Hello, I'm new to the list. About 1 month ago, I bought an 87 4000 Quattro
with 82,000 miles on it. It had been in a barn for 3-4 years, so this car
has been a labor of love. After replacing the braking system and lines, fuel
pump and lines, tires, hoses, belts, thermostat, fan relay switch, plugs and
plug wires, ignition coil, distributor cap, (take a breath,) front lower
control arms and bushings, rear tie rods, upper front strut mounts, various
interior switches and trim pieces, I have a very nice driving car that belies
it's weight and age. I really love this car. However, this morning, an
interesting thing happened. I had driven the car four or five miles after
having the instrument cluster apart to repair the spedo head (odometer drive
gear slipped off the edge) and parked it at a store. Ambient temps here
today near Baltimore were close to 100 F. When I came out of the store 10
min. later, the car would crank, but would not start. After letting it sit
for 20 min., it started up (a little hesitant, but not bad, like a cold
start) and drove it to the street, where it shut off as though it lost
electrical power ( no stumble, just a shut-down with power to the dash
lights.) After 10 min., it started again and I got it home with no problems
in its running condition. Three hours later, when I went to start it, it
would crank, but not start. To date, I have not replaced anything having to
do with the fuel injection system and the fuel pump was purchased new from a
waranteed and reputable source. Any advice on what system to look to next
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gil Bourcier Columbia, Md.
