Thanks for so many of your good wishes and for a speedy recovery.  In answer to
your questions, PlyBoyDoct, the other guy was 17 years old and was driving his
father's 1999 Chevy Malibu (the Toyota Carolla clone).  His airbag deployed and
he refused treatment and went home.  Don't know what the damage was to his car -
my attention was drawn elsewhere at the time, but the Police officer is trying
to get me copies of the photographs which were taken.
