I wonder if it's just doing its job?

Have you tried hand-turning and seeing if it looks the same?

Or grounding the coil, pulling the plugs, and spinning it on the
starter?

Perhaps one cylinder isn't firing or has poor compression and the
balancer is actually _balancing_.
