when i was 15 years old and my father was teaching me how to drive, there 
were two things he repeated constantly:

1.  son, there are a$$holes everywhere, and they can kill you.

2.  you have to pay attention constantly, because if you kill someone 
through inattentiveness or a bad decision, it will haunt you for the rest 
of your life.

my dad is wise.  if i have the choice, i'm taking the tree, because that 
way i will not choose the alternative that kills or cripples someone.
