RE: S2

i used to own a '93 s2 (same mechanicals as your prospect). the s2 update
('94) brought the 6-speed box, the aby (higher boost) motor, and better
suspension damping, and (in some markets) much better brakes. a worthwhile
upgrade, but much rarer in this neck of the woods (new zealand) than the
mark 1 car. the 5-speed gearbox is not one of it's best features, and the
lateral slop is normal. i personally wouldn't be too concerned about
mileage though. these are high mileage capable cars, and are designed for
being driven hard. interiors are usually a good indicator of age, as are
radiator cores...

nice car, the looks of the coupe are still up there, my wife still misses
it.

I have the opportunity of Buying an S2 quattro here in South Africa.
It is a RHD and had 47 000 km on the clock, the 1992 car is selling for R120
000 (about USD$20 000, which seems to be the norm market price for the cars
here)
I noticed that the stick shift seems to be a little loose ( tends to have a
little lateral play, maybe this is normal for this car, it seems strange
when compared to my prelude)
I am however a little concerned that the kilometres have been altered
although there are service records (that may be forged)
Is there any way of telling the true mileage of the car? What are the first
signs of wear? And any other cautions that I should be aware of?
