I've got an '87 5k Turbodiesel with cracked head, and I've seen oil in
coolant, but not coolant in oil. When I removed the manifolds, I saw a
coolant leak to the outside of the block, thru at the head gasket. I
pulled the head and found that the head gasket looked very "worn" and
not good, but not blown either. The head had cracks between the valve
seats on all 5 cylinders, but all cylinders looked the same - just the
way they are supposed to look (not washed-out, white or "burned"). I
more and more tend to believe that the bad, but not blown head gasket
was the problem, cause the head is not warped, but I will leave the
head to a machine shop which will test it for leaks.
Everything in the engine of my car looks normal except for the cracks
and the oil in coolant. It's probably in the head, but there is a
tiny, very tiny chance that the head gasket was so bad and the head
bolts so bad that they caused a leak of coolant.
Heavy-duty head gasket (stainless steel) and RaceWare head studs are
now here on my desk, ready to be installed when I get the head fixed.
The car has got 180k miles, I hope to get another 180k out of it.. :-)
