This sounds like the "Turkey" or "Gobbling" noise discussed here last
year sometime. I think some of these have been attributed to something 
rubbing inside the timing belt cover. I had one that "gobbled" for
quite a while that didn't seem to be caused by the cover though. Some
have replaced the water pump and ended the noise as I remember.
Try looking through the archives using turkey or gobble, maybe I'm not 
remembering these things correctly.
