Huw- I have no experience with this starter/solenoid, but if the ground for
the solenoid is through the frame/mounting, one could perform a resistance
check of the solenoid coil. Just disconect the pos lead to the solenoid, and
read ohms to ground. Some other thoughts to help the lad trouble shoot.
Applying (jumper cable gauge wire) 12 volts to the starter side of the
solenoid will bypass the solenoid contacts, but must be done with care. Not
only will there be a large current draw, but the engine may start (watch
those fingers!!). If the starter has a dead spot even this will not get the
engine to turn but you will know the starter needs rebuild/replace. HTH
