This was a Type 44 design goal. Piech promised a car that would reach
Munich from Hamburg without refueling. Stern magazine ridiculed him.

When the first Type 44s were available, Piech had three delivered to
Stern's offices at Alsteruefer 1, Hamburg, with filled and sealed
tanks. One carburettor, one CIS, one diesel. The diesel car got to
Budapest and started back to Germany.

To their eternal credit, Stern's retraction was as prominent as their
criticism had been. Quite a few waves at the time.
