Radio Code

A few days ago I replaced the battery on my S4 ('93). So now I have
to enter the anti-theft code number on the radio (original "Audi BOSE"
system). Which the PO didn't know, and the dealer from which the PO
purchased it new says it doesn't have in its records system. I'm
therefore resigned to removing the radio, in order to get the serial
number, so a dealer can then give me the code. But one thing
completely confounds me. The manual says: "Use station buttons 1 to 4
to input the code number . . . . Use button 1 to input the first digit
of the code number, button 2 to input the second digit, and so on."
[Duh] Then it continues: "For technical reasons, the first digit can
only be a 1 or left blank. The following three digits, however, may
be any number from 1 to 9." What confounds me is not only how I might
be expected to leave a blank first digit, if necessary (do they mean
just enter 3 digits instead of 4?), but how I could be expected to
enter any digits from 5 through 9 using station buttons 1 to 4. What
am I missing???
