Wrong.  It needs to be right near your line of sight; I put mine over a blank 
spot on the dash (pics on my page, below).

I put mine on the windshield, partially behind the rear view mirror, on the 
passenger's side, allowing the rear antenna a view out the back.  Not very 
obvious (black detector against a black mirror unit).

Their idea is that it won't go obsolete; want to have your keep it longer 
than your car.
