Air ram on a 87 4kcs Quattro

I want to put a air ram on my 87 4kcs Quattro.  The only place I can 
think to put it is below the grill, where the metal hook is located for 
attaching a winch.  I thought I would fashion some sort of sheet metal 
air duct, and run a rubber hose from that to the air box.  

Does anyone know any reason why I should not do this?

The other question I have is there is a thin metal door on a spring 
loaded hinge inside the air box.  This door is closing off the air 
intake.  Is there a reason for this (cold start, choke kinda thing).  Is 
there any benefit to taking this door off, or prying it open a little.  I 
live in California, so I am not too worried about cold weather.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
