I don't know where you're located, but Denver has a public auction where you 
can drive the cars around their lot, and climb all over them to check them 
out. I went to 2 of them last fall, and found people bidding up the cars to 
the point of used car lot retail (and higher). Most of the stuff there was 
pretty much just junk. On one visit I saw a mid 80's 4k 5x5 that was pretty 
hammered sell for over $2k. It might have been worth $1k as a project car at 
best. If you set your limits going in and know what your looking at, it can 
sometimes be productive. Caveat emptor (sp?).
