Camshaft Position Sensor - '95 S6
Listers,
I need some technical advise. My fault codes say that my
camshaft position sensor(CMP, G40) is failing. I get both
power loss and no start symptoms as spelled out in the Bentley.
I had my car in for fuel line leak verification(which failed
due to the heat), and I had them diagnose the car. Since I was
arguing over the fuel line, I didn't get a chance to talk about
my no start problem. The invoice simply states: "Tech scanned
ECM for fault codes. Tech found camshaft position sensor is
bad. Estimate to replace $621.00 + Tax. part needs to be
ordered". ($39.95 for this BTW). Anyway, I've been trying to
find the part. I called a number of places, most say it's a
dealer only part. (Dealer $426 - Part# 035 905 160.) I asked
if this could be considered the hall sender, he said yes.
Well, the specialty CD says there is a hall sender(Part# 034
905 161 - a little over $100 most places). No one has part
number 035 905 160 in the system. Bosch doesn't even have a
number for this part. One shop said that there is no
distributor(coil over plugs), so no hall sender, only a crank
sensor. Another said to make sure it has failed and try to
match the part from a different distributor. The Bentley shows
that the CMP is in the distributor, which I can't find anyhow.
I would like to fix this myself, and I really don't want to pay
$424 for this little sensor. Does anyone have any experience
or ideas?
TIA,
Dean Ferrera
