transmission issues

Hey all,

Have been having trouble with the auto transmission on a 1990 200 fwd) with 159k
miles. The problem
surfaced at first in the car taking a couple of seconds to shift from drive to
reverse when the car was warm
(no problems when cold- pulling out first thing in the morning or after work).
Later the car started shifting late
into 3rd from 2nd from time to time. At the same time the delay caused by
reversing issue grew from 2-3
seconds to 8 seconds or event the need to give some gas to get the reverse to
engage. I am almost positive
that this is in some way related to the broken thermostat I had a month ago.
Although I fixed that as quickly
as I found out about it, judging by the corrosion of the old thermostat, It had
been out for awhile. Which leads
me to two questions:
- Any inputs on diagnosis?
- Any advice on acquiring parts or another transmission altogether?
I am in the Greater New York area (CT to be specific), and the car is in
Pittsburgh PA. Any and all input is
greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Regards,
