RE: Replaced windshield, fitting issue...

Hi Gerard

Looks to me like it's throw a fit time, if they take it out, the screens
going to be scrap, as it can't be re fitted easily due to the bonding
process involved. Also check that they haven't damaged the paint around /
underneath where the screen fits, if they have then it may well rust in the
future.

Subject:	Replaced windshield, fitting issue...

Hi!

I had to have the windshield on my '90 200 replaced on Monday.
Today I noticed what could probably be a fitting problem that is
ticking me off. I noticed on Monday evening when driving home from
the fitment centre that the A-pillars and front edge of dash
seem to rub a bit on the windshield. I pulled the left A-pillar
trim as it was showing alot of oozed glue. Looks like they scraped
the old mouldings off and also took off the vinyl on the leading
edges of the A-pillar trims. Anyway, today I noticed that this
new windshield is not the same shape or fitting as the original
one. It sits flatter and the forward edge of the A-pillars stand
well clear of the window, throwing out the flush fitting of the
originals. I looked along the edge of the windshield where I could
see the placement of the original screen and it looks like this
screen sits some 2-3mm deeper and to me it's unsightly to see the
leading edges of the pillar stick out from the sides of the
windshield. The top is flush with the line of the roof, but down
along the A-pillars the windshield sinks in too much and then rises
back out to near flush fitting at the bottom of the pillars. Yuk!
The mark of the original windshield show the proper fitting.

My question: is it possible to have a windshield removed and refitted
to follow the proper original line? Should I take the car back and
throw a fit? I think this is another one of those typical Cape Town
quality workmanship jobs!

I'm not keen on sitting with more wind noise in this car. For something
I'm cleaning up in my spare time I don't need this unsightly
fitting problem. Maybe I'm too picky about this, but it doesn't
sit well with me.
