The A8 does have wider tail lamps, but it doesn't go all the way across
like the older models.

If you haven't noticed, but within the last five years or so the all-across
tail light design had gone out of fashion and pretty much every manufacturer
has some variation of the discrete lamps,  The A4 is no exception.  Perhaps
this doesn't jive with your preference, but it is the current "look".
