UFO Conversion, Stage 1
Fellow Audians;
I just completed Stage 1 of the UFO conversion on my '91 Audi
200-20v. I wanted to publicly thank some listers and new friends,
because without them, my little project would not have taken place.
Several months ago my brakes made a herrendous noise when I backed.
We determined that the carbon fibre pads had eaten through the rotors
and were getting caught when I reversed. Investigation revealed that
new UFO rotors and pads were close to a $1K. My first thanks go to
Shayne Pavlic who, without knowing me from Adam, let me borrow his UFO
rotors until I could decide upon an option. I eventually decided to
convert from UFO's to conventional brakes.
Thanks to Steve Mills who supplied an incredible amount of
information; S4 struts, associated parts, G60 calipers, and an
introduction to Paul Weston;
Thanks to Paul Weston for slotted rotors and AFT pads;
Thanks to Bob Bruce for the H&R springs; and
Thanks for Barry Quinlan and Downtown Automotive Specialists for
taking it all apart and putting it back together again.
Given the pieces, it's hard for me to tell exactly what is
responsible for which changes -- it's stiffer (springs of course), but
the steering also feels lighter and more responsive. I've been going
easy on the brakes until the pads and rotors get to know each other.
I'm happy with the results and really appreciate all the help I
received.
Stage II will be BIRA's Boxster calipers/A8 rotors upgrade.
The Internet continues to amaze me -- these Audi-related lists are
incredible resources.
