The reality is, VW has not had many problems with its VR6, but yes, the
100k warranty was introduced to induce buyers into showrooms before VW
could get their new/current lineup to dealers.

However, the point of Audi being better built is one that is most
probably false.  The reason being that some models are essentially the
same, even built in the same factories, and all are designed and
engineered by VW/Audi AG employees.  It's like saying a Mercury is
better built than a Ford.  (ooh, bad analogy!)

Last, the reason Jettas and Passats are moving "upscale" is part of the
whole Piech plan. (Head honcho of the whole gig)  Look in magazines for
articles about him & interviews with him.  His plan is to possibly have
another model down scale in the Audi line (already in Europe, the A/S3)
and move VW up (Passat w/more luxury stuff & bigger motors).  His idea
is to have Audi be the "sporting luxury" maker going against BMW and VW
go against *gulp* Mercedes.  IMHO, I think in THIS country it's best to
keep VW competing with Toyota, Chevy, etc., but it's not my company. 

(To wit: a loaded Passat is more expensive than a stripper A4 1.8T)(To
wit #2: A loaded Jetta w/leather etc. will soon be available w/quattro
system...intriguing...)

Anyway, in a nutshell, they're cars from the same engineering, styling,
and manufacturing family; Passats move upscale because Piech wants them
to; and VWs quality has moved up considerably so in the last 2 years,
and with it, Audi's quality.

Spoken like a true VW/AUDI dealer's son...

I always looked at it as Audi being the Higher class than the VW, no
matter 
now good VW are.  But some people can afford A4 and some can't.  So they
get 
to buy a passat.  Audi is a better built car and the VW.  VW had many 
problems in the past with oil leaks from its VR6 engine and the fit and 
finish of a VW is not even compared to a Audi.  Why do you think VW has
a 
100,000mile or 10 year bumper to bumper w?  Because some people are
scared to 
buy VWs V6 engines.  If you wanted more POWER and be cheaper, why dont
you go 
invest in a Camaro Z28.  Its Cheap, its REAL fast! Do you get what I'm 
saying?
