Sounds like your throwout bearing is toasted. Every time you load it up, it
makes noise. And as it's trashed, it even makes some noise unloaded.
Eventually, it can eat through the throwout forks on the clutch pressure
plate, resulting in no action. (Clutch is always engaged).

Depending on how well you car starts, you can sometimes be still mobile if
your clutch dies. You have to start the car while in gear, and shift really
carefully by matching engine revs. Not really great for the starter, or
tranny, but at least you might get home..
