my WP was getting quieter with miles but was still a little noisy. 
Noise seems to be gone but the jury is still out.  (PS the old pump,
when it was good and noisy, was louder than the rest of the car from say
20-30 feet away.  Pretty wierd.)

I disconnect the top rad. hose and fill from there with a funnel (quite
messy...) because as you note, the block side of the thermostat is
drained and you can't (or at least I can't) fill that side from the
expansion tank.
