If you look over the 2.5" drive and PCMCIA drives (now up to 1GB), they 
have allowable operating environment that is quite similar to a moving
vehicle (and more).

IBM recently had introduced a PCMCIA-2-sized HD that by my guess, with so
little mass, would probably work in harsh environments nicely...
