Just some comments,

I never did get my backup lights working on my '86 Coupe GT, 
before it met it's demise.  I replaced the backup switch, and the 
bulbs were okay.  I don't know if I got any farther than that.  PITA.

I haven't followed this thread, if there was one, but it seems like 
you are doing all the things I would do.  Good luck.
