Avant roof rack

For the sake of the gods above please do not buy the Yakima rack.  One came
with my car, and it's a Rube Goldberg contraption.  It would work ok for
something light and independent like a ski rack, but when you have 2-3 bike
racks and a roof box it becomes a cumbersome mess.  I finally broke down and
bought a Thule, and while it's not perfect, it's a whole lot more elegant
design.  The Thule will rest on the roof rails while you tighten things up
and lock them.  The Yakima mounts try to cantilever into the roof,
scratching the paint.  The Yakimas are also prone to slipping (even when you
tighten the hell out of them) with heavy loads.

I've seriously considered calling Yakima to see if they could exorcise the
demons out of the uprights.
