Speedometer problem '865KCSQT

The '86 CSQT I've been trying to get on the road almost went through 
MD inspection.  Turns out the speedometer stopped working on my wasy 
to get it inspected.  I noticed when driving back it started working 
again, and then later, quit working again.  

Looking at Bently, it is not like the old cable speedos, but has a 
speed sensor sending unit on the trans. and is electronic.  I'll 
certainly follow the Bently trouble shooting, but there wasn't much 
detail. 

Question for the list:

What kind of common failures am I looking at on this intermittent 
problem.  What are the most likely places I should spend my time 
looking at, like broken wires or connection at some point that fails 
commonly on thes cars.

post what I find and repair.
