tranny comes apart.
makes big stack of bad & worn parts.
prices out individual replacements.
suddenly big stack of bad parts becomes 2 or 3 items, based on:
"hmmm, that shaft is $60? well it's not _that_ bad... that synchro is $30? well
it's actually in pretty good shape...."
