RE: AF/MH99: Steenkin' Badges?
Quick note so I don't have to cross post another message ... As the time of
the Monterey Historics gets close I see that there are some people who have
planned to attend but are finding that they will be unable to do so, and I'm
sure that there will be others who find that they'll be able to make it but
don't have tickets. Hopefully, there aren't too many people that fit into
these categories, but I'll at least offer to try to hook up needs if you
need to get or give up tickets let me know via direct e-mail and I'll try to
hook you all up. It would be good to know what tickets you have (track,
room, banquet, etc.) and how many. If things get out of hand I may try to
find someone to help ...
====================================
... on the badges, it appears that some of my reasoning behind having a
distributed production may have been clouded by my Pikes Peak comparison ...
that and the fact I was late for a meeting ... :)
We are talking about a number of different people coming from a number of
different areas. The event runs several days and people will be arriving at
different times. Not everyone will be attending one particular event. If
we all agree upon a label format, everyone can procure and produce their own
badge(s) ... no need to have one person responsible for production and
distribution of the badges. This way if someone decides that they can make
it to the event at the last minute, they can have the proper badge as well.
While the total expenditure of the group in the creation of badges will be
greater, no one person will be saddled with the responsibility for procuring
and distributing them on short notice. If we do come up with a standard, of
course I will prepare a number of extra blanks for others I meet before or
at the event who weren't able to make their own ...
What I was thinking was to go out and find the biggest badge I could find
from a common manufacturer (e.g. Avery) and post the manufacturer's number.
Now everyone can go out and get blanks. If someone wanted to come up with a
form that could be printed on the label ... like ... say, the long awaited
AUDIFANS logo :) ... designed in a way to make the logo apparent at a
reasonable distance, and yet have room for people to write their name/e-mail
address/whatever identifying characteristic ... on the badge. This form
could be posted on a website somewhere so that people can get the file and
print it on the blanks. My final suggestion is the least compelling ... and
that is we should try to agree upon a place to wear the badges so that
they'd easily be seen. The "safest" placement might be up near the
shoulder/collar ... but I was also thinking about putting perhaps a blank
copy of the "badge" on my baseball cap ... ;-)
OK ... I just checked out the Boise/Cascade catalog ... most all of the
printer compatible labels come packaged in such large quantities to make the
cost prohibitive ... let me list a couple options ... some of them may not
be obviously compatible with running the labels through a printer ... and I
think the manufacturer numbers are correct, but I decyphered them from the
Boise-Cascade order code ...
* Standard, "Hi, I'm ____" labels 2-1/4"x3-1/8" Probably not printer
compatabile $3.66
* 2"x4" plain white, printer compatability ??? (Wilson Jones #77586 $6.42,
Maco #M5-6432 $4.95)
* 3"x5" plain white, printer compatability ??? (Wilson Jones #77589 $5.25,
Maco #M5-8048 $4.95)
* 2"x4" plain white, inkjet printer (Wilson Jones #76103 $11.62, Avery
#8163 $12.23)
* 3-1/3"x4" plain white, inkjet printer (Wilson Jones #76104 $11.62, Avery
#8164 $12.23)
The cool thing about it is that we should be able to pick each other out
during the event ... like say in the paddock at Laguna Seca or one of the
other venues. As I've stated before, I have a closer feeling to many people
on the q-list than even the other Audi-related organizations because we are
in such close contact ... even though we don't necessarily know what the
other people look like in most cases ...
Another really cool thought came to mind ... once we put this procedure into
place it can be used any time that there is expected to be a group of
audifans meeting ...
My apologies for posting a duplicate message to so many lists, when there
are so many folks who will not be going to the event. In the future it
would probably be best to limit the distribution to the "audifest" list ...
as I will do from now on.
