A quick way to check a battery is to pop the caps off and look for a bubbling 
cell while its under charge (such as jump start or engine running). Not all 
bad batteries will bubble, but all bubbling (one or two cells substantially 
different from the rest) batteries are bad. Most stores that sell batteries 
will also check them for free. Sort of the "fox in charge of the hen house," 
just try find someone you can trust.
