RE: bad battery or bad alternator ?

Ran into a similar problem with my son's 84 4kq a couple of years ago.
Problem still occurred after putting in a new Interstate battery. Ammeter in
hand I started pulling fuses. Bottom line, I found the radio antenna had a
short. Removal of the wire solved the problem.

You may have some sleuthing to do.
