Mike- I think I read somewhere that you must be careful how you orient that 
fan when you remove/store it to do a timing belt change. As I recall, the 
fluid would leak out when horizontal. If this is true, from what I have seen 
so far at Audi dealers in this neck of the woods, it is possible its not an 
aging issue, but a procedural one. Perhaps someone on the list who works on 
these beasts for a living will comment. HTH
