RE: '98 A6 2.8 won't start- mechanics are at a loss...
Currently I have a 96 A6 whose engine is being replaced, under warranty,
due to excessive carbon build up and crank shaft being out of specs. All
this is occurring at 49+K miles (under 50K). The disassembled engine looks
like it may have had 150+K miles. Besides excessive carbon build up, we
have found that there are no steel shims between the valve springs and the
aluminum head. We have been waiting for an engine replacement now for
three months, if you can belive it. What I found interesting is that no
compression tests were performed during any of the services. The dealer
technicians are relying on the computer generated codes to detect any
malfunction.
