4000 Q black smoke

More 87 4000 Q problems with fathers car.   We found a hole in the hose that
connects to the idle stabilizer valve and replaced it.   But the car still
idles rough, misses and sputters black smoke from the tailpipe.   RPM won't
go above 3000.   Could the oxygen sensor be causing this?   That is our next
replacement thought.   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
