Re: quattro-digest V1 #337

I hate to argue about this all, but mocking muscle cars simply for their so-called poor handling and anything else
is simply lack of understanding. The market for those cars in the sixities and early seventies was enormous. Imagine
something like that today, each manufacturer coming up with a car that has more horsepower, more carbs larger
displacement, etc.

The fact is, many of these cars were built for the demand of professional racers seeking stock vehicles to race in a
certain class. The Camaro and Firebird were both created to race in the Trans Am series and had to conform to strict
rules. They had to have 5 litre engines for example. That's why the Mustang, Camaro and Firebird all had engines
with just over 300 cubic inches. The other larger engined cars were of course for drag racing, and didn't need to
conform to such requirements.

>From what I have read, it seems that many of you are ridiculing the intellect of those who prefer these cars. I am
not a huge fan of the late seventies through late eighties Ford mustangs and Chevy Camaros/Pontiac Firebirds, and
yes, I would certainly associate them with "trailer trash" but the good cars are very interesting.

Besides, who worries about losing to a V6 Camaro or Firebird? They're only the small V6's anyway....

Geordie
New Car: Silver1982 Coupe, receiving new seats and anything else I can get my hands on
Old Car: One mean looking '77 Buick Station Wagon; Slow, heavy, loud and never passed a gas pump. Oh yeah, yellow
