As yet, there are no GATSOs on the M1.
Apart from road works, the only permanent camera system on UK motorways
(at least in the South East and Midlands - there are one or two isolated
systems elsewhere) is the variable speed limit section on the M25 between
the M3 and the M4. If the signs are showing a speed limit, the cameras
are live - if they're blank, the speed limit is the national 70mph but
the cameras are not live.
Next year there will be a system on the M20 (at first) that reads the
car's numberplate every few miles and works out your speed between the
observations.
It's the lower class roads that have the damn GATSOs. Slough town centre
is infested with them, as is the A420 from Oxford to Swindon and the
A14 from Huntingdon to Cambridge. The latest ones are fully digital
and transmit the picture and data direct to the police.
Marketing of the Valentine has started over here - I had a leaflet left
under my wipers at Coy's. It guarantees 25 yards warning of a GATSO!
