best 5cyl to use for a conversion??

in addition to my stable of '86 5kT, and TQ's i have a '84 VW Vanagon, with 
the pathetically underpowered and constantly head gasket leaking waterboxer 
engine.
i had planned to put the MC 5cyl turbo engine in there, but it seems like its 
going to be a hassle because of the position of the intake, and some of the 
turbo parts. 
what other non-turbo 5cyl's have impressive HP, or torque ?
 fwiw, my friend just put a engine out of a '88 CGT in his vanagon, and it 
works great.
