If you check everything everyone else has mentioned and you still haven't
found the problem--which is what happened to me--check the connector from
the reverse-gear switch to the rest of the wiring. The connection at the
switch was fine on my car, and the next connector upstream was
connected... but the terminals inside that connector weren't connected!
The stress relief hadn't done its job and the wires had been pulled out on
one side. This was quite a pain to find.

On the 5k, this connector lies across the transmission housing
bellhousing. Everything is accessible from under the hood. Don't know
about your 4k.
