Re: Heater core 87 5ktq HELP!

Hi Mike;

The Bentley is very vague on the heater box removal.

The only mechanical fastener is the metal band across the top of the
box.

The box is glued to the firewall by the self adhesive foam gasket. It
helps to cut the gasket by sliding a custom made L-shaped gasket cutting
tool (I made mine from a piece of filing folder support bar from an old
filing cabinet) between the lip on the heater box and the firewall. Then
pull up on the box until the gasket releases. It takes quite a bit of force
to pull the box out.

You don't have to remove the dash or the middle console. You have to
remove the sides of the console to remove the electrical connector to the
blower motor. You have to take this connector apart and remove the wires so
they will fit through the hole in the firewall when you pull the box out.
The connector is designed to easily come apart.

When you are separating the box halves, be aware that there are screws
hidden in the bottom of tubes moulded into the box. If the halves don't
separate easily, you have probably missed a screw or two.

You will need a new gasket to re-install the box. Don't forget to
install the rubber accordion boot that connects the heater box to the rear
air plenum. This is located at the bottom of the box under the centre
console.

Fun job, isn't it? I've done two of these. The second one wasn't any
easier.

I think this can be considered a rite-of-passage for a Type 44 Audi
owner :o)
