RE: 5k coolant leak
Eyvind,
Looks like it's the pump seal and or pump. Had the same problem with my father in law's i5 engine in his Passat last month. Seems to me if you having to carry a gallon can of coolant it's a bit more than a small leak.

Subject: 5k coolant leak
When I fill coolant on my '87 5k, it will leak slowly out, and drip
from somewhere in the middle/front of the engine. It was really bad
when first starting it (it sat for 6 months), but before I started it,
it didn't leak. Now, the leak is smaller, but I still have to bring a
1 gallon can of coolant, and after driving for a while, I have to top
it up. (red light in the autocheck) Could it be a dried out gasket
that will re-seal when the car is used for some days, or do I have to
change the water pump?
