5000 + 90 = ?
back in december i found out that the engine block in my 1988 audi 90
(fwd, 5cyl, 5speed) i bought was no good, saw oil leaking where the
block meets the head, thought it was the head gasket, opened it up,
brand new head gasket. also noticed brand new radiator. i believe that
apparently the previous owner had overheated the engine and destroyed
the piston walls, low to no compression in 2 cylinders, but car still
took me back and forth to school. so i decided to change the engine.
at the time money was very tight so my uncle, who did the engine change
for me used the block from a 86 5000s he had that was in excellent
running condition, and used the head from my 90, because of the low
profile of the intake manifold. so i was using a 2.2 litre block with a
2.3 litre head. the car drove fine up until the end of June. the car
took me to boston, r.i., toronto, buffalo, etc... without any problems.
but by the end of june i noticed an oil leak where the head meets the
block. which is what originally prompted me to change the block in the
first place. now this fuse starts to blow, number 12, which is the
inst. cluster, cooling fan delay, check engine, abs, las, multiple
sensor, etc... the engine starts to constantly running hot, look at the
temp gauge and it is way above normal, even though the fan is coming on
and i use the phosphate free antifreeze and there is no leak in the
cooling system. turns out as i was driving one evening and the fuse
blows that all this steam comes into the car through the vents, heater
core is gone. so i decide to just bypass the heater core for now. i
also decide to just jump the fan, so that whenever the car is on, the
fan is on. however the car still runs real hot, and it seems that when
the car gets hot the fuse blows, so i can't tell how hot the car is, or
how fast i am going, or how much gas, etc... until i stop and wait
about 30 min. or so and change the fuse again. sometimes it blows when
i put the car in the on position sometimes it doesn't. i am at my wits
end, seriously considering getting a newer audi. i am at school now in
binghamton and it will eventually get cold so i need the heat, from the
heater core. the car didn't cost me alot of money when i bought it so i
guess you get what you pay for. PLEASE HELP ME, Pooooooooooooor college
student and all. TIA
