One other tip, oft repeated: When you have no choice but to jack up the car 
without access to jackstands -- changing a flat tire, for instance -- slide a 
wheel under the appropriate rocker panel.  It won't keep the car from falling 
off the jack but it will prevent the car from totally crushing you 
underneath.  :^)
