As I recall, Road & Track did a test of verious detectors and police radar 
guns, just to see how accurate they really are.  They used a noumber of 
vehicles, but found that a couple wouldn't register on the gun.  It needs 
some kind of semi-flat surface to bounce back off of...They used a Ford 
Probe, and the gun couldn't find it with the headlights down and no front 
plate.  With the lights up and a front plate bolted up, it tracked it 
immediately.
