I don't know about his more detailed comments, but I read some
evidence to support the "VW engine" bit in a recent European
Car. Not much info there either, but they did say that the
1.8 is basically the venerable VW 4-pot motor with the whizzy
Audi 5-valve head.

The article was about an A1 Golf, built for racing; the 5-valve
head from the euro NA 1.8 motor was simply bolted on top of the
original block...
