Help w/ '90 V8Q

I have the following problems with my haeting/cooling system and/or
electronic climate control:
1)  I get no heat when i put climate control temp on "hi" and fan on "hi",
in fact the a/c compressor kicks in because i can hear it squeal when i
turn the heat on.
2)  When I try to run a/c, a loud squeal will come from the lower front
end(compressor?) and it contines rythmically as i drive along.  in
addition, the climate control display will fade in and out and blink and
switch the display between the chosen temp and the outside temp all by
itself.  the air will then turn on and off along with the goofy dispaly all
while the squealing from up front is occuring.  

any ideas?
