Javelina are a species of desert boar ... they're butt ugly, have a mean 
temper and are indeed "about the size of a tree stump, and about as hard."  I 
once hit one at 50mph in an '81 4000 and it got up and ran off into the 
desert while I had to stop and pull out the front fender and airdam enough so 
they wouldn't rub on the tire.  I ended up getting charged by the apparently 
injury-free javelina but that's another story...

Paula also hit one in an Acura Vigor and ended up doing $5k worth of damage 
to her car whereas the javelina ran into the desert uninjured.  Fortunately, 
it didn't charge her but she did say she could see it walking around in the 
brush as she waited for the tow truck to arrive ... like I said, nasty 
critters.
